Job Description
As aTransportation Engineer Specialist, you will work with engineers, field staff, and local public agencies to identify and seek solutions to operational, maintenance, and safety issues on the primary road system. You will have the opportunity to broaden and develop your communication, design, project development, and project management skills. Transportation Engineer Specialist (TES) Position Responsibilities:
Serves as the transportation engineer for primary highways in District 6. The position currently covers the north area of District 6 including Buchanan, Delaware, Dubuque, Jackson, and Jones counties. Specific counties may change based on business needs. This involves working closely with district staff, maintenance, central office staff, and cities or counties.
Development and design of projects that are designed by the district. Typical project types include pavement resurfacing, restoration, and rehabilitation (3R), pavement maintenance (MP), Interstate pavement maintenance (4R), small culvert repairs, and emergency repair (ER) projects.
Serves as district lead on projects being developed by central offices (Bridge or Road Design), Cities, Counties, or consultants. Includes concept and plan reviews, field reviews, detour agreements, preconstruction agreements, coordination with local public agencies, public involvement, and review of traffic control and staging.
Reviews safety, operational, maintenance, and engineering concerns. Identifies solutions that would address the concerns. Coordinates and implements solutions.
Licenses:
A valid Drivers License must be possessed and maintained.
Licensure by the Iowa Board of Engineering Examiners as a Professional Engineer. This licensure must be valid and in good standing at the time of hire and be maintained for employment.Please refer to the minimum qualifications below.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:
1) All of the following (a and b):
a. Licensure as a professional engineer; and
b. Two years of full-time professional work experience in transportation engineering or civil engineering.
2) All of the following (a, b, and c):
a. Licensure as a professional engineer; and
b. One year of full-time professional work experience in transportation engineering or civil engineering; and
c. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree in chemical, civil, construction, environmental, materials, structural, or transportation engineering; engineering management; or a field closely related to transportation engineering.
3) Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes one year of full-time work as a Transportation Engineer.

Additional Qualification Requirements
Prior to appointment, applicants must possess active licensure as a professional engineer by the Iowa Engineering & Land Surveying Examining Board.
