Corteva Agriscience has an exciting opportunity for a Sr. R&D Lead Engineer to work in close partnership with members of our R&D organization to deliver impactful electromechanical engineering solutions. We are seeking a qualified, diverse skill set team member to join the Automation and Field Technologies Engineering team (AFT) located in Johnston, Iowa. Corteva Agriscience is the world leader in the agricultural biotechnology industry including the discovery, development and delivery of elite crop genetics, crop protection, and digital solutions.

The AFT engineering team is dedicated to the successful conception, design, development, integration and support of novel machines and instruments, scientific laboratory automation, process engineering improvements, automated greenhouses, industrial automation, and other enabling technologies within Corteva. Leveraging the most current tools and technologies, AFT engineering delivers against a unique and broad portfolio, providing staff significant opportunities to work with a diversity of projects, skills, and disciplines.

Responsibilities

In this role, typical job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following areas:

  • Develop and assemble proof of concept and prototype devices/instruments in a hands-on setting utilizing machine shop tools and equipment

  • Lead standards and best practices within area of expertise

  • Electrical and motion control component identification, selection, and integration (stepper/servo motors, actuators, safety components, I/O selection and configuration, sensors, etc.) for various engineering projects

  • Identify value added opportunities, critical needs, technical requirements, and implement new and existing solutions that measurably improve capabilities, productivity, quality, and safety of research activities

  • Execute electrical design, panel construction, machine installation, wiring, and startup of systems

  • Design and implement field sensors

  • Generate electrical schematics, BOMs, and other project documentation

  • Participate in team-based project brainstorming sessions and design reviews

  • Evaluate existing processes and recommend modifications resulting in cost savings, quality and safety improvements

  • Work in a team environment within a large, diverse organization, leveraging the skills of others while continuing to build upon your own

  • Provide engineering project leadership through collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of engineers, engineering technicians, and researchers.

  • Prioritize work, develop solutions, and deliver internal automation solutions to Corteva research facilities such as greenhouses, laboratories, seed processing facilities and field research stations.

  • Utilize traditional engineering tools, namely AutoCAD and SolidWorks CAD software to design and document engineering deliverables.

  • Bring the Outside In - Collaborate with external vendors to leverage their knowledge, skills and technologies in the development or implementation of new products and processes.

The following requirements MUST be met for consideration of this position:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, Computer Science, or related discipline, or equivalent combination of education and/or work experience

  • Minimum of 10 years of automation engineering experience

  • Provide engineering project leadership through collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of engineers, engineering technicians, and researchers.

  • Proven experience with the selection, layout, and integration of electrical components into mechanical systems (motors, drives, sensors, power supplies, solenoids, etc.)

  • Proven experience in the development of electrical schematics (AutoCAD Electrical preferred, but not required)

  • Proven experience with 3D CAD software (SolidWorks preferred but not required).

  • Experience designing electrical systems for industrial automation

  • Micro controller experience such as Raspberry Pi and Arduino.

  • Proven knowledge of digital and analog sensors

  • The ability to lead and navigate projects and partnerships with proactiveness while maintaining strong relationships

  • Familiarity with or an aptitude for a variety of programming languages (Python, Arduino, C++, C#, .Net environment, etc.)

  • Printed circuit board design

  • Working knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic systems

  • Ability to lead or assist the assembly of electrical assemblies including panel building, wiring, and soldering

  • Have the right to work in the U.S. without restriction
