Principal Financial Group Senior Accountant- Finance in Des Moines, Iowa

What You'll Do

We’re looking for a Senior Accountant to join our Principal Global Investors team. In this role, you’ll apply knowledge of accounting standards and expertise to tackle business problems, seeking guidance for new or sophisticated situations. At this level, incumbents are providing consultation around issues in their area of specialization based on an understanding of business strategy. Incumbents can independently research detailed sophisticated accounting decisions.

  • Financial Analysis and Reporting: using specialized knowledge and expertise perform accounting analysis and reporting of financial transactions of complexity in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), statutory accounting principles (SAP), tax regulations, or other regulatory guidance. This includes assisting with developing and implementing new accounting and reporting standards. Perform complex transaction processing and exception handling, model cost accounting scenarios and analyze results from forecasting and modeling and apply quantitative modeling techniques to assist with decision making.

  • Compliance and Controls: assist in the development and implementation of governance frameworks and financial controls, supervise control structure and advance issues as vital, drives remediation plans for control deficiencies, establishes processes to supervise compliance and efficiency of financial controls in line with the organization's methodology and regulatory reporting requirements and works with external auditors as part of the planning and coordination of the annual external audits.

  • Management Reporting: develop business unit reporting systems for management, project or performance reporting and implement processes to deliver information to meet regulatory timing and management needs. Interpret financial reports and accounts, identify and evaluate risks and opportunities and present findings to management for decision making.

  • Projects: act as the subject matter authority and work with project owner to ensure accounting and internal control objectives are met through the design of new products and/or systems, carry out testing to ensure the system or process is operating as intended, advance any findings/variances/issues as needed. Identify and implement operational excellence projects, providing business requirements for new systems or improvements.

  • Leadership: lead and handle staff including hiring, training, career development, budgeting, and financial management, provide compensation administration, rewards and recognition, performance management, coaching and mentoring and lead all aspects of team projects and communication.

  • Perform other duties or essential functions as needed.

Who You Are

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance or equivalent experience plus a minimum of 5 years of relevant accounting experience required

  • CPA or other applicable certifications preferred

  • This position may require successful completion of a criminal background check.

Salary Range Information

Salary ranges below reflect targeted base salaries. Non-sales positions have the opportunity to participate in a bonus program. Sales positions are eligible for sales incentives, and in some instances a bonus plan, whereby total compensation may far exceed base salary depending on individual performance. Actual compensation for all roles will be based upon geographic location, work experience, education, licensure requirements and/or skill level and will be finalized at the time of offer.

Salary Range (Non-Exempt expressed as hourly; Exempt expressed as yearly)

$86450 - $144400 / year

Time Off Program

Flexible Time Off (FTO) is provided to salaried (exempt) employees and provides the opportunity to take time away from the office with pay for vacation, personal or short-term illness. Employees don’t accrue a bank of time off under FTO and there is no set number of days provided.

Work Environments

This role offers in-office, hybrid (blending at least three office days in a typical workweek), and remote work arrangements (only if residing more than 30 miles from Des Moines, IA, or Charlotte, NC). You’ll work with your leader to determine which option may align best based on several factors.
