Job Description

The Iowa Department of Inspections, Appeals, & Licensing (DIAL) is seeking a capable and enthusiastic individual to join the department as a Safety Inspection Coordinator!

Who We Are

DIAL is a multifaceted regulatory agency charged with protecting the health, safety, and well-being of Iowans. DIAL employees are responsible for inspecting and licensing health care providers and suppliers, restaurants and grocery stores, social and charitable gambling operations, and hotels and motels. In addition, DIAL employees investigate alleged fraud in Iowa's public assistance programs and conduct contested case hearings to settle disputes between Iowans and various State and local government agencies.

The successful candidate for this fast-paced and critical Safety Inspection Coordinator is a focused and innovative problem solver. This position is located at 6200 Park Avenue in Des Moines. Desired abilities include:

What You'll Do

You will be an integral member of our fiscal team, providing direct support to the agency's financial operations by:

  • Performing tasks relating to the intake and organizing of inspection activities

  • Collecting and evaluating information in order to initiate proper enforcement action

  • Coordinating the efforts of field staff to meet federally mandated deadlines

  • Maintains knowledge and understanding of applicable occupational safety and health codes

  • Provides assistance to inspection staff during difficult inspections or field training

  • Assists with proper hazard identification at public and private worksites

  • Assists with research during the investigation of workplace accidents

  • Arranges the procurement, maintenance, and calibration of sampling equipment and media

  • Assists the Iowa OSHA Administrator with special projects as needed

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Two years of post high school education with major course work in electricity; mechanical, industrial, civil or electrical engineering; or a vocational program in boiler maintenance or repairandthe equivalent of two years of full time work experience in elevator, boiler, or amusement ride installation, inspection or maintenance; or responsibility in a safety or health program including industrial or construction site accident prevention, inspection, control, analysis and reporting; or enforcement of occupational health and safety standards;

OR

an equivalent combination of the above listed education or experience totaling four years;

OR

employees with current continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes the equivalent of eighteen months of full-time experience as a Field Safety Technician, Elevator Inspector, Boiler Inspector, or Power Plant Engineer 3 shall be considered as qualified.

Additional Qualification Requirements

Prior to appointment to the Boiler Inspection Area registration as a National Board Commission Member, issued by the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors, will be required.

Positions require travel. Employees must arrange transportation to and from assigned work areas.
