Position Purpose:

Uses advanced experience in the Specimen Management section of the laboratory to provide expertise. Serves in a leadership role and assists with oversight of daily operations of the Specimen Management section.

What you will do:

  • Proficient in specimen collection through venipuncture, logging in of testing into Laboratory Information System (LIS) and specimen processing.

  • Acts as a resource for lab assistant personnel in Specimen Management and responds to workplace questions and concerns.

  • Assists with and participates in new employee and student orientation and training and safety policy compliance.

  • Oversees education and procedure manuals.

  • Assists and supports quality management systems and performance improvement initiatives.

  • Ensures appropriate workflow of the Specimen Management department and adjusts work assignments as needed.

  • Monitors and maintains work areas to provide efficient use of resources and obtain optimal turnaround times.

  • Positively promotes initiatives of the laboratory or organization to co-workers.

  • Conducts department huddles in absence of the supervisor.

  • Works independently, organizing work to meet established deadlines and records and reports data obtained.

  • Participates in employee selection through team interview process.

  • Performs administrative functions delegated by supervisor/manager.

  • Provides feedback to the supervisor/manager in the performance appraisal process.

  • Verifies and identifies yearly competencies for staff.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED required.

  • Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training specific to population served within 3 months of hire.

  • Knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory experience preferred.

  • Computer skills required

  • One year of clinical laboratory experience required in the Specimen Management department with proficiency in specimen collection, log in and processing.
