Cedar Falls Utilities GIS Tech Intern in Cedar Falls, Iowa
Overview
As a member of the Electric Operations team at Cedar Falls Utilities, the intern student will have the opportunity to develop and maintain GIS data. The intern is provided an opportunity for on-the-job training and will assist in collecting and entering information into the ArcGIS platform. The intern works under direction of the GIS Supervisor who exercises control over the design and productivity of the intern.

Responsibilities
Produces data layers, maps, tables, or reports, using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology, equipment, or systems.
Maintains or modifies existing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) databases.
Assists with transferring data from older versions to most recent or current Geographic Information System.
Maintains a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner that promotes positive relations with customers, co-workers and management.
Conducts field work utilizing GPS equipment to obtain geospatial information for various utlity assets.
Qualifications
Education:
Graduation from an accredited high school, experience or field of study related to Geographic Information Systems.
Certifications/Licenses:
Must have and maintain a valid Iowa Driver's License and meet CFU's insurability requirements.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:GIS; GPS & Surveying; Cedar Falls Utilities policies and goals; AutoCAD; and Microsoft Office Suite.
Ability to: Ability to read and interpret a variety of digital and/or paper maps (Will work with AutoCAD and ArcGIS programs to enter/transfer data between maps); Ability to learn how to operate a GPS unit (May go out into the field to survey utility assets and infrastructure); Ability to work in extreme hot or cold environments, as work performed is outdoors; Create concise, easy to read drawings in order to help CFU employees perform their duties safely and efficiently; Meet deadlines and establish priorities; Maintain accurate records; Communicate effectively orally and in writing with internal departments, vendors, city employees, contractors, and customers; Carry out work assignments as instructed; Establish and maintain cooperative work relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Physical Tasks and Environmental Conditions:
Involves some sedentary to light work in an office setting. Work also involves exposure to extraordinary working conditions, such as inclement weather, dangerous machinery, potential physical harm, and hazardous chemicals. There is frequent need to stand, stoop, walk, sit, lift objects (up to 30 pounds) and perform other similar actions during the course of the workday. Employee accommodations for physical or mental disabilities will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Pre-employment drug screen and physical is required.
