Cedar Falls Utilities Gas & Water Operations Intern in Cedar Falls, Iowa

Overview

As a member of the Gas & Water Operations team at Cedar Falls Utilities, the Intern student will have the opportunity to work on applying academic education to assigned tasks. The Intern is provided an opportunity for on-the-job training and will assist in collecting and entering information into the ArcGIS platform. The Intern works under direction of the Gas & Water Planning Supervisor who exercises control over the design and productivity of the Intern.

This is a full-time summer internship position working from mid May through mid August.

Responsibilities

  • Performs Geographical Information System (GIS) survey spotting.

  • Digitize existing gas & water documentation.

  • Enters data into systems accurately and efficiently.

  • Create specialty maps for Gas & Water planning and construction.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education/Experience:

  • Graduation from an accredited high school, experience or field of study related to Geographic Information or Civil Engineering Technician.

    Certification(s)/License(s):

  • Must have and maintain a valid Iowa Driver's License and meet CFU's insurability requirements.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Critical Thinking Skills — Using logic and reasoning to identify accurate or obsolete data.

  • Microsoft Office skills (Will work with Word, Excel, and Access databases for data entry)

  • Printing/Scanning skills (Will scan paper documents into digital format)

  • Ability to read and interpret a variety of digital and/or paper maps (Will work with AutoCAD and ArcGIS programs to enter/transfer data between maps); Ability to learn how to operate a GPS unit (May go out into the field to survey gas & water assets and infrastructure); Ability to work in extreme hot or cold environments, as work performed is outdoors; Ability to follow instructions, both verbal and written and adhere to safety standards; Ability to follow safety instructions, and operate a vehicle while performing daily functions out in the field.

    Physical Tasks and Environmental Conditions:

  • The physical demands described here are characteristic of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. This work is sedentary while working in the office setting. While outdoors, will be exposed to weather conditions and requires standing and walking on uneven surfaces while collecting data with the GPS. Employee accommodations for physical or mental disabilities will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

    Pre-employment drug screen and physical is required.
