Preferred Qualifications:• Experience that demonstrates expertise in engineering materials fundamentals, including materials characterization equipment

• Experience developing training materials, and conducting training in a classroom or professional environment

• Experience with operating materials related research equipment (i.e., thermal analysis, sample mounting and polishing, optical microscopy, electron microscopy, XRD, general chemistry lab experience, tensile testing, and other mechanical testing equipment)

• Experience that demonstrates knowledge of lab safety standards with a thorough understanding of content area.

Job Description:

Summary

The Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) Department at Iowa State University is seeking applicants for a Teaching Laboratory Specialist II position. The Teaching Laboratory Specialist is a member of a team responsible for multiple departmental research and teaching laboratories including equipment maintenance, user training, safety, and general operations. This position works with other members of the team to coordinate teaching lab schedules, design and test lab protocols, acquire lab experiment materials, update laboratory and safety manuals, verify the accuracy and precision of instrumentation, and interact with Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S), Facilities Planning and Management (FP&M) personnel and other university and technical service people. Additional responsibilities include providing training to faculty, staff, and students on proper safety procedures in labs and on usage of lab equipment The successful candidate will possess knowledge of lab safety standards, safe lab operation, a thorough understanding of content area and the ability to monitor and maintain accurate records. Strong verbal and written communication skills, effective interpersonal skills, and the ability to work with diverse people both within the university and with outside groups are also necessary for success in this position. The candidate will also be self-motivated and can work independently and as a member of a team. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an on-going basis without sponsorship. All staff members are expected to interact collegially and maintain the highest standards of integrity and ethical behavior.

Example of Duties • Maintains, calibrates and coordinates repairs on equipment for a lab program. • Manages the operation and maintenance lab equipment. • Sets up labs to accommodate large amounts of students. • Administers safety protocols.

• Updates process and instructional documents. • Develops new models for lab work. • Maintains schedules and billing for equipment use. • Identifies and purchases necessary materials for lab coursework and operations. • Instructs, trains, and evaluates staff, graduate assistants, and student workers.

Level Guidelines• Intermediate-level position with solid professional and/or technical skills working under general supervision to achieve goals• Applies broad, working knowledge of the principles of the field to moderately complex, difficult, and varied problems and issues• Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action and resolve problems• Responds to a broad range of inquiries and requests• May provide training and/or direction to lower-level staff• May lead projects of moderate scope and complexity• Provides guidance to students
