Job Description:Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

The Department of Industrial Design in the College of Design at Iowa State University (ISU) invites applications for the position of Lecturer in the area of Industrial Design. The appointment for this position has an anticipated start date of August 16, 2024, and the initial length of the appointment will be one academic year (August 16, 2024 – May 15, 2025)

The department currently has an immediate need for a Lecturer in Industrial Design Studio.

The candidate is expected to establish a record of scholarship at the highest levels, contribute to the teaching missions at the undergraduate levels. Candidates should have strong communication skills, share our commitment to enhancing excellence, and exhibit the potential for long-term leadership in supporting the mission of the department, college, and university.

Minimum Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s in industrial design or a relevant design discipline.

  • Experience in Studio Teaching pedagogy in a Design related discipline.

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in User Centered Design methodology.

  • Experience in Making focused studio-based teaching pedagogy

    About the Industrial Design department

    The vision of the industrial design program is to empower the next generation of designers to identify and solve small to large-scale problems in order to devise systemic, forward-thinking solutions, mindful of societal needs and ecological repercussions, fostering health and well-being for people and the environment.  

    The mission of the program is to provide students with the necessary tools and experiences, spanning across the product development timeline from the fuzzy front-end of problem finding through design research and synthesis, to discovery of meaningful design solutions that can range from products to services and systems. The industrial design program offers opportunities to collaborate with diverse disciplines on campus and beyond to tackle a wide variety of local and global design challenges.

    Program Structure 

    The studio-based pedagogy focuses on the design process at its core which is supported by lecture courses that focus on specific tools, skills and methods. It is a complex ecosystem of learning objectives that can be combined in different sequences for students to explore different options as well as for faculty to teach courses that they are passionate about.

    The studio meets three times a week for four hours each session for twelve contact hours per week.
